The Greenstone Digital Library Software was used to create the E.B. Green Digital Collection.

Greenstone offered great flexibility in customization of both the interface and the metadata scheme. The ability of Greenstone to work with multiple document formats also provided flexibility throughout the digitization process. The search engine provided by Greenstone was chosen due to its high level of functionality. Greenstone also supports OAI-PMH access and is Z39.50 compliant. Greenstone can be used by people of varying skill levels, making it the most feasible open source platform in the event that the historical society expands the digital library.

Access initially will be provided through a remote desktop connection to the Graduate School of Education Student server at the University of Buffalo. The Greenstone system will be migrated to the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society servers upon completion of the project. Exact plug-ins used were dependent on the final metadata, interface and digitization policies, supporting image, HTML, PDF and text documents, as well as Dublin Core metadata and Dublin Core to MARC metadata mapping. The main configuration files were modified to suit the interface.
