Policies - Compliance Statement

The interface for the E.B. Green Digital Collection is designed to facilitate the discovery of information sought by our users, with their aesthetic preferences and ultimate satisfaction in mind. The design is highly usable, flexible, and sustainable, with a consistent layout throughout that provides multiple points of information access, including keyword-search functionality and multiple browsing options.

The interface maintains visual identity with the host organization, The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society Research Library, by utilizing in-common elements such as logos and color schemes.

The interface design adheres to current World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance standards by:

  • consistent use of elements within page content (headings, lists) to define structure, and separate Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define presentation
  • including alternative text ("alt tags") in all images
  • providing alternatives to scripted navigation
  • use of thoughtful color choices to facilitate visual identification of changes in state
  • non-use of color as the only means of presenting pertinent information
  • non-specification of font sizes to facilitate legibility
  • using hyperlinked text that is sensible when read out of context

This interface strives to comply with all guidelines under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act in order to provide equal access to all users, including those with disabilities.

Section 508 observance is required of all Federal agencies; although observance is not required for the E.B. Green Digital Collection, this interface complies to the best of the developers' ability, in order to provide and promote "global design" that is usable and accessible by all users.
